A Day in the Life of a Water Rokit Activity Day
Last month, Water Rokit’s Head of Education, Charlotte Harverson, ran another exciting and awe-inspiring Water Rokit Activity Day at Barrs Court Primary School, Bristol – winners of a Wastebuster competition. In this blog, you’ll be able to learn about what’s involved in the Activity Days we offer.
The Morning of the Activity Day
Charlotte started the day in the school hall, where around 30-40 children from various classes came bursting in full of excitement in anticipation of the wonders of what this ‘different’ school day would bring.
Learning about Space
The children started off learning about how we all come from Space dust. Their reactions were like something out of a cartoon – big eyes and huge grins.
After talking about what rockets are used for, what satellites are, and the important jobs they perform, Charlotte delved into an explanation of thrust and Newton’s Third Law.
The children then went on to learn about SpaceX, and how they reuse and recycle the booster section of their rockets, saving millions of dollars on materials and manufacturing, and caring for the environment. This was likened to the booster section on the Water Rokit, and how we reuse our bottles time and time again. Inspired by this, the children pondered about what else they could reuse and recycle in their daily lives.
It's Showtime!
After their busy morning learning new words and all sorts of fascinating things about Space, it was time for the children to head outside and fly their Water Rokits. It was wonderful to hear all the laughter and excitement as the Water Rokits blasted off into the sky to a height of up to 100ft (30.5m)! All this fascination ignited the spark for this wonderful group of children to ask some very intelligent questions – always wanting to learn more!
After Lunch
Having come back from a well-deserved lunch break, chattering away about the excitement of the morning, the children were then given the task to customise their Water Rokits to carry an ‘eggonaut’ into the sky and see if they could return it safely to Earth.
Using a variety of recycled packaging materials, payloads were built, and stuffing was added to try to protect the eggs. This was a great way to learn about impact force, and the results clearly illustrated this. I’ll leave the rest to your imagination as to whether the eggs survived!
It was a very successful, action-packed Water Rokit Activity Day, with adventure, experiments, and learning. Thanks to all the teachers and children at Barrs Court Primary School for the memories and new friends made!
