Experiment 5 – Forces in Action

Target:
  • KS2
  • KS3
  • KS4
  • KS5/Sixth Form

As a rocket climbs, it accelerates and then decelerates because of the action of gravity.

As water is pushed out of a bottle, an upward force is generated. The stronger the force, the higher the rocket climbs.

Your task:

Devise an experiment to measure the force generated as the rocket is launched. Pay particular attention to safety. Does the force vary as the amount of water in the bottle is altered?

Do different sized bottles generate the same force? Can you make any accurate predictions?
