Gimbaling

Target:
  • KS1
  • KS2
  • KS3

What is gimbaling? A gimbal is a pivoted support that permits rotation of an object about an axis. A set of three gimbals, one mounted on the other with orthogonal pivot axes, may be used to allow an object mounted on the innermost gimbal to remain independent of the rotation of its support.

Our Water Rokit has fins on it. These fins make the rocket stable as it climbs through the air.

On big rockets, the engines adjust a little bit to the left, and a little bit to the right. This is called gimbaling. This helps stabilise the rocket.
