We have already seen that the flight of a rocket follows a curve which is related to the acceleration of the rocket (see EXPERIMENT 1 – OPTIMUM WATER LEVELS FOR PERFORMANCE). This curve is known as the trajectory of the rocket. We can use a ramp to measure and draw a graph of the rocket’s trajectory. First, set the rocket up in the ramp with the rocket pointing downwind. Fire the rocket a few times, measuring the range each time and finding the average range.
Making A Launch Ramp
A simple launch ramp can be built from a wire hoop (use an unbent coat hanger for the wire) and a short length of plastic guttering. Cut a 60cm length of guttering and balance on the wire hoop.
