Hard Landing

Target:
  • KS4
  • KS5/Sixth Form

Early Russian Spacecraft landed on hard ground. Even when slowed by a parachute, a “heavy” landing would happen and considerable damage and injury could result. Because of this, the craft had a device that “cushioned” the landing and absorbed most of the shock of landing.

Your task:

a) In groups, discuss where shock absorbers are used. Try to collect illustrations and make a montage showing shock absorbers in action.

b) You will be given a selection of materials. Design and carry out an experiment to test which material(s) is the best shock absorber. Do not use the rocket. It must be a “fair” comparison.
