An altimeter is a device that measures altitude, the distance of a point above sea level or the altitude above the surface of a planet or moon. Altimeters are important navigation instruments for aircraft and spacecraft pilots who monitor their height above Earth’s surface. Spacecraft altimeters work by timing the round trip of radio signals bounced off the surface.
